Five ways to build an ethical closet on a budget
Comparing the price tags of sustainable brands to fast-fashion brands can sometimes make you want to build your entire wardrobe through Forever 21 and Fashion Nova. In moments like these, always keep in mind the true cost that fast-fashion has on the environment. While the price of sustainability is higher upfront, the longevity of each item will actually save you money over time.
Take it further and build an entire ethical wardrobe!

1. Properly take care of the clothes you own
Taking care of the clothes and bikinis that you already own can go a long ways. Expensive or cheap, clothes can last much longer if they’re taken care of properly. Fold heavier items, hang dress shirts, repair buttons, and hand wash what needs to be hand washed, like swimwear. The more you take care of the clothes you already own, the less shopping you’ll need to do which automatically decreases your carbon footprint.
2. Be more selective
Anytime you go shopping for clothes, shop for items that you actually appreciate. Even if that $5 bikini top feels tempting, keep in mind that it’s probably not be something that you’ll keep for an extended period of time. If anything, you’ll only get a few wears out of it before it ends up in a landfill at the end of the year.
Avoid shopping for sales.
Only shop for what you need, when you need it. Being more selective ensures that you truly love the pieces you’re buying and that it’ll be a perfect addition to your wardrobe.
3. Spend on durability and quality
It’s hard to deny that shopping is fun. But, shopping can absolutely hurt your bank account if you aren’t careful. Instead of shopping for less more frequently, shop for quality, but less frequently. Spend more money on fabrics and pieces that will last years instead of weeks so that you can cut your number of shopping sprees in half.
4. Shop vintage
If you happen to love the act of shopping, you can always shop vintage and continue building an ethical wardrobe. At vintage and second-hand stores, you’re recycling clothes to avoid them ending up in landfills. The best part about vintage shopping is that you can buy and also sell vintage! Once you have clothes that you no longer wear anymore, you can bring them to second-hand stores for someone else to find and make use of.
5. Support ethical brands
As always, continue to support brands that are making their best effort to work against the fast-fashion industry. Build your wardrobe off of brands that are making a difference and making an impact on the planet, like we do at Sinipesa Swim.
