Choosing plants sounds easy on paper, but there’s no denying that it can be difficult to maintain for someone who’s not used to eating more plants and less meat. Rather than cutting out animal products entirely and then giving up in a month, allow your body to adjust to a new way of eating. The slower your transition into a new healthy diet, the easier you will find sustainable eating to be.

2. Less Bulk Shopping

Buying in bulk always seems cost effective, but what we don’t realize is that our environment ends up paying for it later on. Shopping in bulk can be harmful for a number of reasons including excess packaging, wasted food, and overproduction.

Bulk items are usually processed which takes up large amounts of water and energy to produce. In addition, buying in bulk can create wasted food at the end of the week because you could be buying more than necessary.

Instead, tailor your grocery list to meet your needs for the week and spend your money on ingredients to make more unprocessed meals.

3. Shop Locally and Eat Seasonal

Although you can probably find strawberries at the grocery store all year long with labels that say “fresh,” they’re not always in season. Which means, they’re not always fresh.

Instead, out of season items are being transported to your grocery store which supports our reliance on fossil fuels and contributes to more air pollution. Shopping at local grocery stores and farmers markets can be a great way to find fresher produce and support your local community at the same time.

Creating a sustainable diet isn’t just about eating to sustain the environment, but it’s also about being able to sustain a certain lifestyle for yourself.

Start slow and take baby steps into sustainability to ensure that you’ll be able to maintain what you’re practicing. Just by being more conscious in one area of your life like what you eat, you’re doing what you can to improve our planet. That’s all we can ask from each and every one of us.
